What exactly are the roles of a putty knife in home renovation?

1. Paint runs: If the paint is applied too thickly in one go, it can lead to dripping. While the paint is still wet, use a putty knife to spread it out evenly. However, if the paint has already begun to dry, allow it to fully cure before gently sanding the surface smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. Once sanded, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth, then apply a fresh coat of topcoat—just be sure not to apply it too thickly.
2. Paint peeling—whether due to the surface being too smooth, causing newly applied paint to adhere poorly—or because of wood rotting, rust on metal, or even poor paint quality itself—can all lead to this issue. To address it, applying filler, brushing on a primer, and then recoating with fresh paint are common steps that often require an oil putty knife.
3. If cracks appear, it’s usually necessary to remove the paint using a chemical paint stripper or a hot-air gun before repainting. However, if the damage is limited to a small area, you can use a sanding block or wet/dry sandpaper moistened with water to gently grind away the cracked paint. After smoothing the surface thoroughly, apply filler with a putty knife, followed by a coat of primer, and finally repaint as usual.
4. For paint blistering, first, use a putty knife to carefully pierce the bubbles. If moisture emerges, it indicates that dampness has seeped in beneath or behind the paint layer. Next, remove the blistered paint using a heat gun, allowing the wood to dry naturally. Finally, apply a primer before repainting the entire repaired area.
