Using a putty knife during spackling work

Summary: Commonly used putty powders usually need to be mixed on-site. When preparing the putty powder, always follow the mixing ratios specified in the product instructions precisely.
The crucial stage in paint application is applying the putty—this step ensures that interior walls are smooth, solid, and glossy, while also achieving a tight bond with the wall’s base surface. The quality of the putty work directly impacts the overall finish and durability of the wall later on. Typically, the putty is applied evenly to the wall surface, followed by three repeated passes. Once fully dried, the area is carefully sanded smooth using sandpaper. This process is usually carried out with either a putty knife or a scraper. Below, Linyi Putty Knife Manufacturer provides a brief introduction to the putty application method:
First, start by preparing the putty powder. Typically, common putty powders need to be mixed on-site. When mixing, be sure to follow the product instructions exactly for the correct ratio. Additionally, thoroughly stir the putty, then let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes before stirring again until fully homogeneous—only then is it ready for use.
Second, apply the compound using a scraper or putty knife in the usual way. When spreading, press down firmly and evenly to ensure thorough adhesion between the filler and the wall—aim for a single, smooth application rather than multiple passes. Typically, the thickness of the applied filler should be between 0.8 and 1.5 mm; applying too thickly may lead to hollow sounds, while applying too thinly could result in powdering. As a general rule, newly built homes usually require just two coats, whereas older homes benefit from three coats.
Third, finish by sanding with sandpaper. After the filler has dried, carefully sand it down using fine-grit sandpaper. Always sand from the edges toward the center, paying extra attention to corners and edges—aim for straight lines whenever possible. Be sure not to miss any spots or accidentally sand through the filler. Once the sanded surface is free of dust and debris, you’re ready to apply the topcoat directly.
