Summary: For surfaces with large pores and other imperfections that don’t require high surface smoothness, localized patching or filling can be used. Partially embedded putty, however, may be more challenging to apply.

When applying putty with a putty knife, press firmly against the surface, angling the knife at 50–60 degrees to the object. As you run out of putty under the knife, gently lower the angle to 40–50 degrees to ensure smooth and even application. Let’s take a look at five effective methods for applying putty, straight from the experts at the putty knife manufacturer!

  1. Circular Object Scraping Method: For applying putty onto circular objects, a rubber scraper is recommended. Since rubber is flexible, it allows the scraping process to adapt smoothly to the curved surface of the object, enabling the putty to be evenly spread into a circular layer. Other scraping techniques can also be used, but mastering the proper skills is essential.

II. The Back-and-Forth Scraping Method. First, apply the putty along the flat edge, then push the scraping tip outward at a 30–45-degree angle to remove the putty from the recessed areas. Simultaneously, squeeze any excess putty into a neat line along the right side of the scraper blade. As you move the scraper toward the front end, pivot the tip back to a 30–45-degree angle and pull it backward, scraping away the remaining putty while applying it to the next recessed area—again leaving excess putty neatly aligned on the right side of the blade. This process ensures that the entire surface of the object is smoothly filled and leveled. This method is ideal for achieving a perfectly even finish on scraped surfaces.

Third, the comprehensive application of putty—meaning all surfaces of the object must be repainted and re-puttied. A decorative finish is often required, or even multiple layers. In some cases, localized filling may also be necessary to meet technical specifications. The putty used for full-scale scraping should be softer and easier to work with.

Fourth, local embedding. For surfaces featuring large holes or other imperfections that don’t require high surface smoothness, localized patching or filling can be used. Partially embedded putty, however, may be more challenging to apply.

Fifth, the single-sided scraping method. This means the scraper is used to scrape only on one side—such as from top to bottom, front to back, or bottom to top. Applying putty to the car body, for instance, would involve scraping it either from top to bottom or front to back.
